3 Simple Stages to Smiling Again
|
 |
The first stage involves treatment planning beginning with a detailed assessment and precise assessment of your mouth, gums, teeth, jaw and medical history. CT X-rays may be required to assess the amount of bone available for implantation and to determine the exact position of the implants.
At this appointment, Dr Christopher Ho will provide information about the advantages and disadvantages of the various treatment possibilities, taking your wishes into account on what is feasible and the overall clinical situation. Subsequently, a treatment and cost plan is prepared and forwarded to you for consideration.

At the second stage, Dr Christopher Ho will uncover the gum to insert the implant under the jaw bone usually under local anaesthetic or under intravenous sedation if preferred. This procedure will take approximately 1-2 hours depending on the number of implants to be placed. Once in place, the implant is left to heal.
During the healing period which follows, the bone knits firmly (osseointegrates) with the implant and forms a secure base for the new teeth. Your overall health will influence the healing time period, but it will usually take between 3-6 months, during which time you may receive a temporary crown, denture or bridge so you can retain full mouth function and appearance.

 |
3 to 6 months later, at the third stage, Dr Christopher Ho or your referring dentist will place an abutment. A mould of your mouth is then taken for a crown, denture or bridge to be fabricated, to ensure an exact fit.
Subsequently the next procedure involves securing a new crown, denture or bridge onto this abutment, giving you natural looking and comfortable teeth.

What Happens Next?
Caring for your dental implant is just as important as caring for your natural teeth. Regular brushing with a soft bristled toothbrush twice a day and flossing once a day will ensure your implant lasts for many years. Although the implant is titanium and the replacement crowns porcelain, your gums and surrounding teeth are still susceptible to periodontal disease and will impact on the life and success of your implant.
